Gatsibo unsolved murder: victim relatives complain delayed investigation
Relatives of a young man who was beaten to death at Kiziguro Gatsibo District in eastern Province have blamed the Rwanda Investigation Bureau for delayed investigation in the case.
The paternal aunt and guardian to Brian Iradukunda who was killed at 33 in August 2020 said there has not been any arrest of any suspects in the case.
“RIB at Kiramuruzi told me that they were pursuing some suspects but until now there has never been any news about the proceedings” she told Kigali Law Tidings on Tuesday 20 April 2021.
Kigali Law Tidings contacted the RIB spokesperson Dr Thierry Murangira who, after two days, told us that the file had been sent to prosecution but did not specify when or if there are suspects arrested in connection with the case.
We have asked the prosecution but are yet to share any information and the family is yet to know of any move so far.
The family says that on 7 August 2020, Irakunda was found lying by the roadside early morning still breathing and immediately rushed to Kiziguro Hospital which’s about a kilometer away from where the victim was.
Kigali Law Tidings contacted the executive Secretary Gakomeye Cell as one of the people who took the body to the hospital but she said she was too ill to speak to the media.
“It emerged that some people started telling us that they had heard Iradukunda being beaten in a home in the area where he was found lying. We insisted that an autopsy examination had to be carried out before burial” Jacqueline Uwamwiza, a cousin to the victim said.
“We also learnt that Kiziguro Hospital never gave any treatment to the victim because when we asked for medical bills, we were only charged for mortuary services” Uwamwiza continued.
The body was transferred to Kacyiru Hospital for an autopsy examination after which the victim’s aunt Kantengwa was called to RIB station at Kiramuruzi where she gave her account.
“I told the RIB about the people who said they had heard Iradukunda being beaten at night and I told RIB about it and the witness. RIB seemed to know everything” she said.
Kigali Law Tidings established that the home where the victim allegedly was beaten belongs to a staff of a local government entity that governs the area.
Eight months down the road, the family has seen no movements on the case despite allegations that the suspects are known and those who ran away sometimes come to visit their families.
“Someone alerted RIB where a suspect is hiding in a neighboring district and when they come to visit their families” another relative talk Kigali Law Tidings, wondering why investigators have had no interest in pursuing justice for the bereaved family.
